Application of ’Compact’ utility to an Access Database and study the analysis of
original and compacted database

Create a Customer database using MS-Access 2007 and add the following
table in to the same database using New Blank Database option. Name the Table:
Customer Master and add following fields. Cust_No, invoice No, Cust_Name,
Address, City, State, Pin. Code, Mobile. No, Gender, Invoice - Amount Perform
the following 1. Enter at list 20 records in the tables, Save the database and exit
MS-Access. 2. Note down the file size of Customer database file. 3. Reopen the
database file and delete at list 10 records from Customer Master table. 4. Again,
save the database and exit MS-Access and Note down the file size of Customer
database file. 5. Reopen the database file and use the Compact utility of Access.
6. Again, save the database and exit MS-Access and Note down the file size of
compacted MS-Access database file.

Note: Write the procedure of using Compact utility of MS-Access and note down
the effects on database size after performing the above exercise.

Steps to Create a database; applying Compact utility on the same:-
1. Start; Program;MS Office; MS Access 2007.
2. Click on Office button ; new ; Blank Database ; Specify Location were to
save ; Create.
3. Click on Datasheet tab; views ; Click on Design View
4. Save the Table with name Customer_Master.
5. Add the following fields in it.
Field name            Data Type
Cust_No               Autonumber
invoice No            Number
Cust_Name           Text
Address                  Text
City                        Text
 State                       Text
 Pin. Code                Number
 Mobile. No             Text
 Gender                    Text
 Invoice - Amount    Number

6. Save the Table by pressing CTRL+W.
7. Enter atleast 20 records in the table.
8. After adding record Save the Table, Close the Table and exit MS Access.
9. Note down file size of database file by right clicking on file ; properties.
10. Reopen database file and delete 10 records from the table named
Customer_Master.
11. Again save database, exit MS Access and note down file size of database.
12. You will observe that there is no change in the size of file.
13. For applying Compact Utility ; open database; Click on Office button ;
Manage ; Compact and repair database.
14. Database to compact from window appears, give the name for compacted
database and click on save.
15. Close the database and view the file size of compacted database.
